The 8th Missing Tapestry is a double sided tapestry made with studio Body Building and in collaboration with Stejdelijk Museum Breda and woven by EE Exclusives.
Royal dutch ancestor Henry II of Nassau commissioned 8 tapestries by renowned weaver Van Orley in the 1500s. As per custom, each tapestry depicted key family members of the Nassau family and their accomplishments. The tapestry were hung in the castle of Breda, the residence of Henry III, but all got lost in a fire, remade, then lost again. All that is left today is 7 out of the 8 cartoons from the original tapestries.
Studio Body Building was asked to continue the story of the tapestries by completing the series with the lost tapestry. The tapestry replicates the layout of the original tapestries, with Henry III in the centre, surrounded by landscapes, and an ornamental border. Using these as a way of retelling the story through a modern lens, accentuated by the photorealistic jaquard weaving. Each side tell the told and the untold story of the wealth accumulation of the affluent family, wherein the floats create a blurred and inverted view of the opposite side.
