Green Green Grass of Home is an exhibition piece that centres the audience as part of the landscape of Google street view. In Front of a green screen, and with use of a joystick the user can navigate and explore the city. The exhibition is aimed to explore how the human body interacts with digital spaces. Here, emerging themselves in a digital replica of their home, they interact, by following prompts given on screen.
Google street view in its popularity gets to shape how the world is represented and by extension understood. Who, what, when and how the city is represented is dictated by a faceless super cooperation in silicon valley. The representations feel unfamiliar, and uncanny. With the body as a tool, the uncanniness of the emersion reveals the shortcomings in googles depiction. The people faceless, places frozen in time, purely visual and spacial, and without emotion. Google street views is revealed as a continuation of colonial cartography practices, and a direct product of the free and open internet.
